Mobile operator Vodafone UK appears to have picked a lousy time to inform customers in Turkey, many of whom will have been left stranded by the mass cancellation of flights until at least June 2020, that they’re about to impose a £6 per day charge for them to continue using their text, call and data allowances.

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of mobile and broadband provider Vodafone UK, Scott Petty, has blasted mass media reports as “categorically untrue” for claiming that their network(s) won’t be able to cope with the increase in voice and data traffic due to the impact of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Last night’s decision by the UK Government to order the immediate closure of all shops selling “non-essential goods” has begun to hit, with mobile operators Three UK, O2 and BT (EE) all confirming that their high street outlets have been shut and must remain that way until told they can reopen.

Yesterday was an important day for broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom because it was the first working Monday after the mass closure of schools, which has concentrated the demands of both home (remote) working and family internet traffic on to residential connectivity. But as expected the day was busy, albeit uneventful.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today revealed some more details about the new £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN), which aims to extend UK geographic 4G mobile coverage to 95% by the end of 2025, and explained how they will assess the compliance of O2, Vodafone, Three UK and EE (BT) with those commitments.

Customers of O2, EE, Vodafone and Three UK – as well as various virtual (MVNO) mobile providers – are today reporting sporadic connectivity problems with making calls, which began at just after 10am today. Some reports have claimed that this issue allegedly stems from an interconnect fault on O2’s network.

As expected Transport for London (TfL) has today announced that their planned trial with O2, Vodafone, Three UK and EE (BT) of a new 4G mobile (mobile broadband) network along the Jubilee Line (platforms and tube trains in tunnels) – between Canning Town and Westminster stations – will go live tomorrow.

Customers of Vodafone’s mobile network are being informed that they will not be charged for any data (mobile broadband) consumed while visiting or using websites and online services for the National Health Services (NHS), which they said includes subscribers to VOXI and TalkMobile.

The UK telecoms regulator has today finalised their rules for this year’s forthcoming auction of the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands, which hopes to boost new 5G mobile network coverage and mobile broadband speeds further into the Gigabit-capable (1000Mbps+) territory.

After a long wait Cityfibre has finally confirmed that they will begin the £45m build of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network in the Derbyshire (England) city of Derby during “late spring” 2020, which will aim to cover “nearly every home and business” (usually reaching 85%+ of local premises).

But one aspect may have been watered down.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has cut the price of their 4G and 5G focused SIM-Only “unlimited data” (mobile broadband) plans in half, albeit only when you take one of them on a lengthy 24 month contract term. The catch is that this discount only lasts for the first 6 months of service.

Full fibre builder Cityfibre has today confirmed that an additional 36 UK cities and towns have been added to their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband roll-out programme (total of 62), which working with ISPs like Vodafone and TalkTalk aims to eventually cover 8 million premises by 2025 or a bit later.

Vodafone has invested $25m (£19.5m) into Texas-based AST & Science, which is building a new set of low latency Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites under their “SpaceMobile” project. The constellation would make it possible to connect to your Smartphone via 4G and 5G directly from LEOs in space (instantly covering poorly served areas).

Cityfibre has provided ISPreview with an update on their on-going ‘Copper to fibre switchover‘ consultation, which considers the question of retiring Openreach’s (BT) old copper telephone lines in favour of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband, albeit from the perspective of an alternative network provider.

Comparison site Broadband Genie has today revealed the winners of their broadband speed awards, which covers different categories across standard, superfast and ultrafast connections. Overall Hyperoptic, a full fibre (FTTP/B) ISP that serves apartment blocks, was named the fastest ISP for both downloading and uploading.

Ofcom’s automatic compensation system for customers of UK broadband ISPs has now been in operation for almost a full year, but despite that three of the providers that originally pledged their support – Vodafone, Plusnet and EE – have yet to officially join the scheme. But this could be about to change.
