Further to Saturday's exclusive news (
here) regarding expected job losses at Tiscali UK (
Pipex), it's now been confirmed that hundreds of staff are to be made redundant.
Precise figures are still hard to come by, although estimates range from a few hundred to a thousand jobs being lost at sites around the UK. The '
Manchester Evening News' hints towards 300 job cuts at Tiscali's Christie Fields call centre in Chorlton by Christmas.
It's believed that other support sites, such as the Welwyn Garden City office, will also cut back and or close completely as part of a phased plan. This will see Tiscali replace its UK call centres with new operations in North Africa and India from 18th January 2008.
The good news is that Tiscali has already confirmed to us that it will retain
Pipex's site at Sligo (Ireland). We've since learnt that another site at Stoke Mandeville will also be retained.
Typically Tiscali's customer call centre support has never been especially strong, as many of those that continue to complain about their service would attest. It's hard to see how this will improve matters and may only make things much worse.
