United Airlines is becoming one of the first to enable passengers with wireless Internet access technology (Wi-Fi) equipment while in flight. The move follows Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval to install the needed kit inside aircraft.
United and Verizon were given the go-ahead by the FAA after proving that using 802.11b/g wireless technology - fitted on most laptops sold today - does not interfere with the aircraft's operation. The companies have worked together for more than a year, including months of preparation and testing for safety, in order to obtain FAA approval.
The facility will initially be available on United Airlines domestic US flights on Boeing 757-200 aircraft, used to test the Wi-Fi technology. However, United aims to eventually make high-speed wireless Internet access available to all passengers - including those flying to and from the UK.
