BT has used Intel's new
WiMAX announcement to push its own UK ambitions for the wireless technology. The operator is aiming to provide self-installation kits for home and business users within just 18 months:
Speaking at the UK launch of Intel's Rosedale WiMax chip, BT Retail's Chet Patel said that the company was looking to mimic the services already available on Wi-Fi and duplicate them for WiMax.
"For fixed broadband, they [self-installation kits] took 2 to 3 years", said Patel, a general manager for the telco. "Today is the start of it for WiMax. It will be a year to two year until the equipment and networks are available. We're hoping it will be 18 months until plug and play is available".BT is already well know for its
WiMAX trials and is among several other UK operators in welcoming the technology.
Its expected that the first chip will be capable of up to 70Mbps over a 30 mile distance, although theres already potential for far faster speeds later on. More @
