UK ISP MetroNet has boosted its local call rate (0845) dialup service by offering free 'Acceleration' technology alongside. The system uses a combination of format reduction (improve efficiency of HTML etc.), compression and caching to achieve faster loading:
There are many reasons why millions of people still don't find Broadband entirely suitable for (or indeed available to) them.
But rather than miss out entirely on faster Net access we're now able to offer them the next best thing - Accelerated Dial-up.
Using a standard 56k modem users can increase the speed of their dial-up connection by up to five times. Web pages load faster, emails download quickly and graphics open with ease to ensure they get the best from surfing the net.
Unlike similar services from other providers there are no set-up or subscription charges - users simply pay a local call 0845 charge when they dial-up (depending on their telephone provider this can be around 1p off-peak). What's more the service can be accessed without any specialised
software, using a standard web browser.
So for people with light Net usage requirements this solution offers the nearest thing to Broadband, without the added costs.
