ISP UK Fast has attacked a culture in which many businesses sending marketing e-mails still fail to get proper consent from those they're sending it to:
Britains Best Business ISP, UKFast warns businesses against a blasé attitude to Internet communication. Research reveals that UK workers are resigned to a deluge of Spam and this apathy sends confusing signals about what is acceptable.
MD Lawrence Jones says todays arena of Spam is so diverse that those receiving it often dont realise and more importantly, some people sending it do it almost innocently. 75% of Email is Spam and its not about content its about consent.
When you tick an online box for a daily bulletin or newsletter you consent to bulk Email. If you start receiving bulk Email without asking for it, then it is Spam.
Jones believes Email legislation is not well known enough. Our customers constantly receive newsletters at their info@companyname.co.uk addresses. Even when the information is useful to them, they may not have asked for it. If every company with access to your basic addresses sent useful information to you, youd soon start looking up your rights.
Evidence suggests Start-Ups often take this approach desperate to build their subscriber list. You can almost understand a new business believing that one Email now and again will just be a drop in the ocean, but this is not a responsible attitude because small businesses are helping to fill the ocean.
At UKFast we have bulk Emailing software that we lease to clients, but we insist on a legal contract that stipulates they attain consent. As an ISP, we have a responsibility to the Internet community as a whole and not just our clients.
Jones is calling on UK official bodies to educate the public on their Telecommunication rights and stamp out the apathy that surrounds seemingly harmless Email. Email is the worlds most effective form of communication and misuse of the system is watering down its effect.
