NetFury Web Accelerator Targets UK Market

Posted: 07th Mar, 2007 By: MarkJ
NetFury has announced its intention to "launch a major assault on the UK web accelerator market in 2007". Accelerators typically enhance the speed at which web pages and e-mails are sent by using compression and other technologies. They're usually only handy for slower dialup surfers and of minimal benefit to broadband users:

The organisation is aiming to attract over 100,000 customers, both corporate and private, over the year. The overall aim is to become the leading web accelerator in the country within three years.

The NetFury accelerator re-route and compress data over the Internet to speed up current down load times for web access via broadband and dial up connections. The information is transferred intelligently, prioritising the text and then images so users can view the key elements of a page first.

Web accelerator subscribers can expect to receive web speeds at between 3 and 7 times faster than their present services; in some cases this can be as much as 25 times faster for dial up services, which still make up 25% of the market. The greater efficiency offered by web accelerators ensures that any caps on the amount of material that can be accessed are less likely to be reached.

NetFury also expects to see strong uptake from ISPs re-selling into their client bases to achieve an additional margin across their client base. Subscribers can use the web accelerator service without switching their Internet Service Provider (ISP) and so NetFury will be aiming to build relationships with the ISP market, which can offer web accelerator subscription as part of their service.

A secondary benefit is a significant reduction in bandwidth costs for the ISP as well as reduced churn of the customer base.

Andrew Montgomery managing director of Packnet: “There are over 20 million households and business in the UK that have web access. The majority have not heard of a web accelerator and that gives me great confidence that we will have strong demand once the word gets out.”

Simon Wharton managing director of NetFury: “There are a few web accelerator companies in the UK, but the market is not as competitive as it should be. We want to offer a better value and faster alternative that challenges the status quo.”

Wharton continues: “We believe we will take a significant market share over the next three years.”

Unfortunately such technologies do not physically increase the speed of a connection, although for slower links (dialup, mobile etc.) they can be handy when downloading websites and e-mails. Compression shrinks the information being sent, allowing more of it to reach you in a smaller space of time. Most websites and e-mails are initially uncompressed.

NetFury also offers an accelerator for broadband, although such users would have little practical need for one. Take the promotional information on their website with a big pinch of salt; wording like "Netfury Accelerator can increase your broadband connection speed" can be deeply misleading.

Having said that, at £24.99 per year, there will be those on a slower connection that could still benefit. With broadband being so cheap, you could just as easily invest in a faster connection.
