Kingston Communications (KCom) has responded to yesterdays criticism (
original news) over the lack of broadband competition in Hull, which it serves.
The provider was speaking in response to some frustrated words by local Liberal Democrat MEP Diana Wallis and issued the following statement:
"
There is a popular misconception that Kingston Communications prevents other ISPs from providing broadband services in Hull. This is not the case. We are obliged by Ofcom to make wholesale internet products available to ISPs that wish to provide broadband services in this area via our network.
The broadband market in Hull is open to any ISP who wishes to offer services here. Whether or not they do so is purely a commercial decision for them based on their view of the attractiveness of the market."
To be fair KComs broadband packages arent as out of sync with the wider market as some reports have claimed (
packages) but resolving the problem of competition in such an isolated pocket will not be easy.
Its hard enough to get new customers onto ISPs let alone convincing those from a well established provider to swap, especially if youre unable to offer anything different outside of the wholesale products remit.
