Boingo has passed the 100,000
Wi-Fi (broadband wireless) Hotspots mark after launching its new "
international" service for business travellers. The move could have a huge impact on general
Wi-Fi Hotspot pricing because of the ISPs new flat-rate model:
At 29 or $39 per month, Boingo Global is the worlds most affordable global roaming plan, establishing a new paradigm for business travelers using
Wi-Fi to remain connected and productive as they travel internationally. With no incremental roaming fees, Boingo Global is also the worlds first truly global flat-rate service.
Customers can sign up for Boingo Global today at Boingos website (www.boingo.com), as well as at more than 50 hot spots in France and Norway. Later this year, customers will be able to sign up for the service at more European locations including hot spots in Germany, Italy and the UK.
The days of per-minute charges and incremental roaming fees for Wi-Fi Internet access are over, said Dave Hagan, Boingo president and CEO.
Traveling for business is hard enough without having to watch the clock while youre trying to be productive.
Naturally the first question on most peoples lips will be "
what's the catch?". Most
Wi-Fi providers have certain usage restrictions and a little digging into the T&C's reveals a similar trend at Boingo:
13.2 Without limiting the foregoing, except to the extent expressly set out in this Agreement or with our express written permission (in which case you must comply with any terms relating to such use that we specify), you agree not to use the Services to:
(i) incur more than 3,000 total minutes of use of the Services in any single calendar month;
We could be reading it the wrong way, yet the crux appears to be that 29 Euros gives you access for up to 50 hours per month. To be fair that's not a terrible amount and the service isn't advertised as "
unlimited", but it should still be stated more openly in the package details.
