The European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA) has published its latest Internet access statistics. During the past 6 months broadband connections have grown by 16% to connect 84 million homes, up from 73 million.
The research, which covers Europe's 15 oldest member states, attributes most of the growth to local loop unbundling (
LLU):
STATEMENT: "Success in many of the high ranking countries in Europe can be attributed partly to local loop unbundling, the process whereby competitors rent the last mile from the national telecoms incumbent and offer their own broadband services to consumers."
The information will no doubt give EU officials extra reason to encourage a split of older incumbent's in its newer European states.
