Yesterday the government highlighted UK broadband as having the best availability of all G7 nations. Sadly, research commissioned by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) finds it lacking in price and choice:
The study, commissioned by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), found that in terms of choice and price, the UK was placed third behind Japan and Canada.
But in countries like Japan dense housing makes it more economical to provide broadband. In Canada, analysts said, the Government ploughed more money into getting people connected.
The report also pins the blame for Britain failure to meet the target on BTs dominance of the infrastructure and the slow progress in opening up the field to new providers. So, if you want 4Mbps broadband for just £12 per month, head to Japan (*cough* or Sweden, if outside of the G7 *cough*). More @
