More research, this time from Jupiter, has found that 27% of EU surfers spent less time watching TV in favour of the WWW during 2004 (17% in 2001). The finger has once again been pointed at broadband uptake:
Newspapers also face competition, with 18% of Internet users reducing their time reading newspapers in 2004, compared to only 13% in 2001, Jupiter found.
In Western Europe an average of 40% of broadband users said they spend less time watching TV since using the Web. Whilst broadband penetration will only reach 19% in Western Europe by the end of 2004, this will rise to 37% in 2009, representing a major long-term cannibalization threat to TV companies.Unsurprisingly broadband users were also found to spend more time online than their dialup counterparts, but then that much was obvious.
