Network and telecoms operator Telefónica has today announced that they will no longer supply wholesale narrowband (metered & unmetered [FRIACO] dialup) services. The change is part of the firms renewed focus on broadband:
From 16 December 2004, Telefónica UK will no longer supply wholesale narrowband services, as the company moves to focus fully on the growing demand for broadband. The wholesale provider is currently supplying narrowband un-metered (including ST FRIACO 0800) and narrowband metered (0800 and 0845) dial services for ISPs within the UK. All clients affected by this change have been made aware of the circumstances and Telefónica UK is working closely with them to ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption to their businesses.
The decision was made due to the fall in demand for wholesale narrowband services, which is in line with the general shift taking place to broadband Internet access in the UK. It enables Telefónica UK to concentrate on wholesale broadband services in line with this trend.
The change represents a major step in the progressive evolution of Telefónica UK. The shift in the wholesale market from narrowband to broadband services is the result of a strategic review undertaken since January 2004, by Andrew Peters, chief executive of Telefónica UK. It complements the introduction of international services last month, as one of a series of steps being taken to lay the foundations for growth in the UK.
"For Telefónica UK, the future for wholesale services lies in broadband, particularly the creation and delivery of wholesale broadband services, which ensure ISPs can extend their offerings," commented Peters. "We are committed to creating wholesale broadband services, and are actively pursuing a number of options that will allow ISPs to have more flexibility and choice on network sourcing, including those arising from the more favourable climate for LLU in the UK."
We wouldn't be surprised to see further suppliers follow a similar rout, albeit over a period of years and not in quick succession.
