Namesco Preps 8Mbps IPTV Service

Posted: 08th Mar, 2006 By: MarkJ
UPDATE: Added package details from the ISP. Namesco looks set to become the latest UK ISP to get involved with IPTV (Internet Television) services by launching tvMax. The product will utilise Netgem's iPlayer Home Media Solution and be coupled to an 8Mbps broadband connection:

Netgem UK will provide the consumer equipment, software and management system that will enable Namesco to offer customers the ability to watch free to air and pay digital TV, pause live TV, record digital programmes, access the 8 day electronic programme guide, and connect to their PC via the home network to view digital images and movies on their TV, or listen to their MP3 music.

Customers will also have access to a number of IP delivered ‘channels’ on the tvMax service, that will enable them to subscribe and listen to Podcasts, view video clips and get access to news and information services.

Netgem UK’s CCO Phil Walder said; ‘We are delighted to be working with such a dynamic and enthusiastic company who have realised the new opportunities available to ISPs from bringing new services to the Television.

‘Namesco have already shown that they are ready to create innovative new applications and services that will add value to their broadband offering, increase the benefits to their customers and consequently increase loyalty and the opportunity for new revenue streams.
’

The tvMax service will launch in April this year, timed to take advantage of the new high bandwidth broadband also available then. The equipment will be very simple to install with plug and play connection to the PC, so that users will very quickly be able to consume content on their televisions.

As well as time-shifting and local recording, the iPlayer Home Media System also includes a peer-to-peer client to enable efficient network content distribution – and the ability to access Catch Up TV services planned by broadcasters in the near future.

‘The fact that Namesco have excellent experience in hosting and domain name registration, added to their new broadband products, means that they are well placed to help users start to create the new personalised content services that will begin to transform TV consumption. Everyone will be able to have their own TV channel in future,’ added Phil Walder.

Credits to Digital TX Limited for pointing out Netgem's latest press release. No doubt Namesco will issue its own details on the service in due course.

It will also be interesting to observe how ISP's manage the increased bandwidth demands upon their networks, although much will be dependant on the quality and cost of the product.

UPDATE:

The new tvMax packages, will inclusively bundle a broadband connection, up to 8Mb, the iPlayer Home Media Edition set top box and a Zyxel USB/Ethernet router, with monthly prices starting at £25.95. The feature packed service will allow users to access Freeview digital television, pause, rewind and record live TV, schedule programmes using the 8 day EPG (electronic programme guide) and more. In addition to the advanced viewing functions, users will be able to stream photos, movies and MP3 files from PCs on their home network and browse the web directly on their TV. Namesco's exclusive tvMax portal channel will give access to webmail, Internet browsing, podcasts, video on demand, music and other interactive content, whilst allowing users to develop their own TV channel.

The TvMax service will launch on April 28th, and will be available from http://www.tvMax.co.uk
