UK ISP
Be Broadband (
O2) has announced the introduction of a broadband speed tester to the front page of their website. Be hopes that the move will show its commitment to
Ofcom's voluntary Code of Practice (CoP), announced in June, that requires ISPs to be more honest with customers about what they can actually deliver, as opposed to just displaying advertised rates:
Felix Geyr, Managing Director at
Be Broadband, said:
Be Broadband has always been proud of it's performance and with the launch of this speed estimation tool, new customers can check the speed they will receive, rather than the up to that other ISPs provide. We feel it is a step in the right direction for the broadband industry to cut through customers confusion and improve customer trust in their services. Be Broadband currently offers the fastest broadband in the UK according to many independent sources and now broadband customers will see just how much faster Be Broadbands service is compared to other ISP providers.
The tester appears to function in two parts, with the first checking your existing line speed and the second predicting what you could get using the ISPs own 'up to' 24Mbps ADSL2+ broadband service.
Unfortunately the second phase of the testing service does not work on lines that haven't been unbundled (
LLU) to work with Be's broadband product.
