The former town mayor of Whitby in Yorkshire, Ada Myers (75), has reportedly been left in tears after buying a TalkTalk (Carphone Warehouse) broadband package from a doorstep salesman. Unfortunately the line rental and free broadband bundle sold to her wasn't available in the area, a fact that the salesman conveniently neglected to mention.
Sadly, according to the
Whitby Gazette, this wasn't the end of Myers ordeal. TalkTalk, being unable to provide the free broadband deal, instead decided to impose their more expensive £35.99 per month package:
I rang immediately to cancel it but had to spend nearly two hours on the phone including being cut off four times before I got through. Then a few days later I got a letter telling me to phone them but I spent another six hours on the phone over three days telling them Id cancelled.
They told me it was too late for me to cancel and they were installing broadband. I told them I hadnt agreed to it and then I found my main phone had been cut off and Im now having to use a mobile phone. I even sent them a letter by recorded delivery but Ive had no acknowledgement of it.
I got so upset about it its made me ill and when I get stressed I get vertigo. Im usually very strong but I was reduced to tears when no-one would listen to me when I kept trying to cancel it. The young man who came to the door was so persuasive but he must have known theres no free broadband in Whitby.
Thankfully, with a little help from the Gazette, Myers has now received an apology from TalkTalk and been refunded. It certainly goes without saying that you should never buy anything from doorstep sellers, although in this case it's clear that TalkTalks support also fell asleep on the job, something they've done a lot of in the past.
