The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has introduced a new voluntary scheme - '
BBFC.online' - that will see Internet downloads of videos and games given age ratings, similar to those found on films purchased from high-street shops.
Disney, Warner and Fox have reportedly already signed up to the scheme and others are set to follow. 700 online videos have already received a classification certificate, which is expected to hit 1,000 by the end of this month.
The
BBC News Online item notes that the scheme is not currently designed with Internet TV catch-up services, such as the iPlayer, in mind; though they are apparently welcome to join. It's hoped that the service will ultimately encompass TV set-top boxes, games consoles and mobile devices too.
