Broadband router/modem specialist AVM has warned Internet surfers with a wireless (
Wi-Fi) connection to take security seriously. Recent research from
Ofcom revealed that less than 25% of respondents understood how to secure their computer properly, with just 7% claiming to use all of the security settings available to them.
Thankfully two thirds of consumers did at least recognise the threat and were concerned about their Internet security. AVM warns that failing to secure home networks could put a huge number of consumers at risk "
its the virtual equivalent of leaving the door or window open when you leave the house," they said:
You wouldnt dream of going to the shops without locking all of your doors, explained Matthew Tyler, country manager at AVM. But, if youre running a wireless network without adequate security, thats effectively what youre doing. People need to be aware of the risks and take the appropriate precautions especially when theyre accessing the Internet wirelessly.
Thankfully most modern broadband routers come with firewalls and more importantly, encryption. AVM has uploaded a new '
Security Page' to help consumers understand what they need to do. We recently uploaded a '
Top 10 Wireless Security Tips' article of our own with the same purpose.
