BT has announced that its FREE Digital Vault (backup) service, which offers broadband consumers access to 2GigaByte's (GB) of online storage space, will come to an end on 30th October 2008. Customers will instead be forced to take the operators £4.99 per month 50GB package or risk losing all of their stored data.
The Register notes that BT has made heavy use of its free storage service in recent TV adverts for BT Total Broadband products, though this refers to their 5GB package and not the 2GB one. It is unclear how many people use the service and why it has been withdrawn.
Thankfully there are alternatives, such as SkyDrive's free 5GB's of online storage. We've also hunted down some other options:
