UK ISP
KeConnect has begun issuing its remaining fixed-speed (HOME 500 to 2000) broadband customers with a letter warning them that the BT supplied service will soon be coming to an end. The notice, most of which has been re-pasted below, urges users to upgrade onto the ISPs more modern 'up to' 8Mbps packages:
It has come to our attention to inform you of the latest changes that BT are making to the service they provide. In the next few months BT will be discontinuing all Home products and they will no longer be available to any customers or Internet service providers. Keconnect have not been made aware of the exact data but we have been told it will be in the very near future. BT are updating all exchanges to give customers a much faster speed which the home products do not provide.
Over the past few months Keconnect have launched some brand new ADSL Max products to reflect this change and to give our customers the chance to upgrade their connection, these products have become extremely competitive within the Market Place also very popular with our customers as they give you a much faster speed and you still get to keep the top quality service that Keconnect provide.
Typically most UK ISPs have already phased out their pre-8Mbps fixed-speed ADSL broadband packages, although many still have existing customers on those services, even though they may no longer be offered in public. Others have quietly upgraded users onto a MAX (8Mbps) package with lower fixed-speeds to match their old one.
BT had always intended to retire fixed-speed services with the completion of their 21st Century Network (21CN) project, although as the ISP itself suggests, pinning down a precise date hasn't been easy. Neither BT nor KeConnect have responded to our hails for a comment.
Meanwhile, customers of other ISPs with older 512Kbps to 2Mbps fixed-speed ADSL packages should probably expect to receive a similar sort of message sometime in the near future. Typically this does not apply to ADSL services advertising speeds of up to and over 8Mbps (MAX, WBC etc.).
