The latest May to June 2008 survey of UK broadband speeds from
moneysupermarket.com has revealed that O2 (Be) came top of the table for 8Mbps package performance, offering customers an average download of 5.39Mbps. Sky followed in second place at 3.59Mbps and surprisingly TalkTalk came in third with 2.99Mbps. The average UK speed in Britain was estimated by the site to be just 2.97Mbps.
Over 20,000 speed tests were carried out during the last quarter, with O2 (Be) also leading the way with its high speed packages of 16Mbps and 20Mbps, offering an average speed of 8.15Mbps. In addition, just one in four (25%) broadband users felt they didnt have sufficient speed to meet their browsing habits.
The speed tests, carried out on connections advertised between 2Mbps and 24Mbps, suggest for best value, people should look at 2Mbps products. The results show they achieve an average speed of 2.11Mbps at an average cost of £10 per month, though 2Mbps packages of that sort are hard to come by. The packages offering least value for money are those with speeds greater than 16Mbps. The average cost is £18.60 but the average speed is just 7.02 Mbps.
