Northern Ireland Boosted by New Transatlantic Broadband Cable

Posted: 07th Jan, 2009 By: MarkJ
Hibernia Atlantic, a transatlantic telecommunications company, has won a major new £28m contract to link-up an existing North American undersea cable with Northern Ireland just off the Portrush coastline. The cable will be 22 miles long and could make faster and cheaper broadband services available to the whole country.

The Department of Enterprise (DETI) expects the project to be complete by the end of Q1-2010 and it will be in operation until the end of 2018. Northern Ireland has not previously had a direct cable link like this to the USA.
