The
Broadband Forum (formerly DSL Forum) has approved a new Technical Report 176 (TR-176) "
ADSL2plus Profiles for IPTV", which contains best practice and recommended profile parameter settings for use in the deployment of Internet TV (IPTV) services over ADSL2+ ('up to' 24Mbps broadband) connections.
The parameter values were derived from the experiences of ISPs that have already tested, trialled and/or deployed IPTV over ADSL2+ and hence represent current industry best practice. It's hoped that they will help to ensure Quality of Experience (QoE) and Quality of Service (QoS) for new online TV services:
"Our work continues to evolve as the industry around us changes. Our main priority is to provide workable network, access and management solutions and standards that answer real world problems," explains George Dobrowski, Broadband Forum Chairman and President. "Our next big challenge, FMC is driving a lot of new work and industry collaboration, and we will do our part to ensure wireline providers are equipped for this next wave of broadband expansion."
Typically most modern ADSL/ADSL2+ connections will attempt to 'learn' the best possible broadband speed of your line and then save that to a profile. We suspect that IPTV specific profiles would work in much the same way, albeit perhaps catering for larger packets of data. Sadly the Technical Report is not yet available on BFs site and thus we are unable to determine any details.
