Thousands of
BT's Chester city centre customers could have been left without a telephone line and broadband connection for several days after the operators contractors accidentally struck a main cable. The cut, which occurred at approximately 9pm on Monday, was at the junction of Frodsham Street and Gorse Stacks:
Speaking to
The Standard, a
BT spokesman said: "
Last night we were getting phone lines connected and it should be completed by Friday. It has affected the centre of Chester and was caused by accidental damage by our own contractors.
We have been working 24/7 in shifts to get people back on as quickly as possible but it's not like electricity. We can't just flick a switch and put it back on. There have been a couple of hundred faults reported, not more than a thousand, but we're not sure exactly how many customers have been affected, that's not our objective. We just want to get it back on."
Naturally businesses in the area have warned that they are losing large sums of money to the outage, while residents have been angered by the time it is taking
BT the fix the fault.
