The Carphone Warehouse in Hull's St Stephen's centre reports that there has been a 200% rise in sales of USB Modems for
Mobile Broadband connections over the past three months, which compares with a national average rise of 45%.
Carphone suggests that residents may be choosing to bypass Kingston Communications' (Karoo) local network altogether, choosing to vote with their feet at the areas lack of supplier choice and high prices:
Store manager Michael Readings told
thisishullandeastriding.co.uk: "
We have seen mobile broadband sales go through the roof recently, showing that our customers and the residents of Hull want not only more choice in their broadband provider, but are also looking for better value.
I am not that surprised, though. Customers are always coming in and complaining they cannot access a lot of the broadband offers advertised in the Carphone Warehouse, such as Talk Talk and Virgin Media, as they are KC customers.
We explain they can get broadband through a dongle [USB MODEM]. At the moment, we can sell more in a day than mobile phones."
Kingston (KCOM) has made a number of changes to improve services in the area, including revamping their own packages and lowering wholesale prices. Unfortunately this has had little impact in terms of supplier choice. It remains to be seen whether the
Mobile Broadband uptake in Hull is physically resulting in fewer land-line broadband connections for KCOM.
