The European Union (EU) has published the latest version of its '
Broadband Performance Index', which compares 27 member states (EU27) based on a mix of broadband speed, price, competition and coverage. Happily the UK fairs quite well, placing fourth due mostly to high ratings for strong market competition and price:
The highest ranked is Sweden, followed by the Netherlands. Both countries have a high propensity to use advanced services and a competitive environment that has ensured affordable prices and high speeds.
Denmark, UK, Norway, and France formed the second cluster. Frances performance is very good in terms of supply-side indicators such as speeds and prices, but is limited by the take-up of advanced services.
The average take-up download speed in the UK appears to be 3,644Kbps (3.6Mbps), with 75% of households owning a personal computer. Meanwhile the average monthly median cost (price per person) of a 2Mbps connection was £6.72 and £13.10 for 8Mbps.
