London's Mayor, Boris Johnson, has told the BBC London 94.9 radio station of his plans to make the capital into a true "
WiFi city", giving everybody within its walls access to a wireless Internet connection.
The Register quotes Johnson as saying: "
what we need is a city where anywhere you go, you can log on, you can get on the web." He also hinted that the service should begin in Stratford, an understandable location due to the 2012 Olympic games being held there.
However London is already extensively covered by commercial wireless networks and it was unclear whether Boris intends for the service to be free or commercial. Smaller cities have had some degree of success offering a two tier free/commercial model, where everybody is given access to a slower service but can pay for a faster upgrade.
