Ofcom has released its latest quarterly (Q2-2008) Telecommunications Market Data Tables (
here), which includes a breakdown of total small business and residential broadband connections.
BT Retail's market share has remained unchanged for some time now at 26.5% for the third consecutive quarter. The figures break down as follows:
BT Retail DSL (ADSL) - 4,396,000
Other DSL (exc. LLU) - 3,846,000
Virgin Media (Cable) - 3,563,000
Other inc. (LLU DSL) - 4,797,000
It's worth comparing these figures to those released for the same period last year (Q2-2007), when UK broadband connections stood at 14.38m and
BT Retails overall market share was 25.8%:
BT Retail DSL (ADSL) - 3,716,000
Other DSL (exc. LLU) - 5,017,000
Virgin Media (Cable) - 3,192,000
Other inc. (LLU DSL) - 2,459,000
Clearly
BT,
Virgin Media and cheaper unbundled (
LLU DSL) broadband providers have managed to increase their stakes, with the latter seeing the largest growth of 2,338,000 unbundled broadband connections.
However this staggering uptake in unbundled connections appears to come at the cost of a massive decline in
BT based DSL broadband ISPs (i.e. Other DSL). Sadly such ISPs often find it difficult to compete at unbundled price points, thus making them more prone to churn due largely to less attractive pricing.
