The CEO of
Tesco Mobile, Lance Batchelor, has hinted that his division of the popular supermarket chain might launch a new mobile phone and broadband bundle service to compete with
TalkTalk. Presently nothing is set in stone, though Batchelor did inform the
Independent Newspaper of his following thoughts:
We have looked at it and are considering it, but he stressed Tesco had not yet pinned down details or a timeframe for a launch. A one line summary of my business plan is to be the leading telecoms player in the UK by any core metric, such as profitability, and that includes being bigger than Carphone Warehouse and Virgin [Mobile].
Tesco Mobile is a joint venture between Tesco and
O2, so such a move would not be surprising especially when the giant already offers a managed broadband solution through its
Tesco.net division. However hopes of competing directly with
TalkTalk might be a little premature.
