New statistics from the Office of Communications and the General Office of Statistics Scotland have revealed that over 100,000 households in Edinburgh still do not have a broadband connection.
The
Edinburgh Evening News item, as spotted by
Thinkbroadband, notes that
Virgin Media has stepped in with a special offer of support for the area - a free XL (up to 20Mbps) broadband trial for one month:
There's no payment required. Installation's completely free and you don't have to take up any of our other services to take part in the trial. There's no minimum term contract, just the usual broadband legal stuff and a quick credit check, and if you don't want to keep it after the 30-day trial, you don't have to do anything, it'll just be disconnected automatically. And if you decide to keep it at the end of the trial, you've got a great range of packages to choose from.
So, if you're not a
Virgin Media Broadband customer yet and you live in a
Virgin Media cabled area in Edinburgh (postcodes EH1-17, EH21, EH47-55, FK1-6), get on the phone to us. There are only 1,000 places, so grab yours quick! The offer ends on 20th November 2008, or when we reach 1,000 places - whichever comes first.

Virgin's token promotion, while helpful to some, is unlikely to address the problem without knowing what is at fault. On the other hand, perhaps this is normal? Few places in the UK could claim 100% uptake.
