Gamers owning a Nintendo Wii console may be pleased to learn that the BBC has now made its web-based iPlayer Internet TV service available to you. The BBC's Head of Digital Media Technology, Anthony Rose, writes (
blog):
"
On your Wii, youll first need to install the Internet Channel, which costs 500 Wii points, or approx. £3.50. Unfortunately theres no alternative to having to buy the Wii Internet Channel for iPlayer web site access at his time. But later we hope to be able to get iPlayer on Wii without this purchase being needed. After youve installed the Internet Channel, browse to http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer, find your favourite programme, and hit Play. The programme should stream and play immediately as we're no longer using full-screen mode."
However, readers should note that the BBC needed to increase the bitrate to 820Kbps from 500Kbps over the ordinary FLASH based player because of the method (codec) used by Wii consoles (needed more bandwidth to achieve the same picture quality).
Due to this customers will need a 1Mbps broadband connection to view the content properly without delays, which may hinder the novelty factor of having iPlayer on your Wii. Be aware that this could also add to data usage costs with your ISP.
