BT appears to have revised down its broadband speed expectations for their forthcoming 21CN Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) product, which will use ADSL2+ technology to deliver speeds of 'up to' 24Mbps.
BT Wholesale's MD of Products & Strategy, Cameron Rejali, recently told reporters that roughly 50% of the country could expect to recieved speeds of 12Mbps+. However,
PCPro has uncovered conflicting figures from a BT hosted meeting that took place between ISPs on 13th February this year (
here).
The most recent data, which comes from BTs lab tests, estimates that 50% of households could only be expected to achieve speeds of at least 6.3 to 9.3Mbps:
BT WHOLESALE'S 21CN SPEED ESTIMATES
% of UK households - Expected to achieve speeds of at least
(Max) 12.3-16.3Mb/sec
10% 12.1-16.2Mb/sec
25% 10.9-14.7Mb/sec
50% 6.3-9.3Mb/sec
75% 3.3-5.0Mb/sec
However, BT puts Rejali's remarks down to the success of its 'up to' 8Mbps MAX technology, which performed better in the real-world than under test conditions. Typically the slower a connection the smaller your proportional increase will be and vica versa.
