BBC Online has done an editorial on the forthcoming broadband ADSL2/2+ technology, which is somewhat faster (20/24Mbps) than the current standard (see our '
Future of Broadband' article). This comes just ahead of
Bulldog's expected ADSL2 service launch:
In the next couple of months we will be seeing the next generation of ADSL called ADSL2+. It has been ratified by the men in suits and the manufacturers are gearing up.
"ADSL2+ will give you a much greater bandwidth to the home," said Sarah Kemp of Nokia. "For instance if you live within two kilometres of a central exchange you can have up to 24 megabits to your home.
Alternatively, you can run ADSL in 'Reach Extended' mode and have up to 200 kilobits per second up to seven kilometres from the local exchange. So you have it both ways. Either lots of capacity close to, or less but further out, compared to ADSL."It'd be interesting to see if, should BT ever be clear about whether ADSL2/2+ is to be among its future services, whether they could extended it in the same way as ADSL's current 10KM trial is now.
