Today saw a ray of hope cut through an otherwise gloomy sky after BT admitted that, should its sums turn out to be wrong, then the operator might reduce the business increases. Sadly the statement is rather thin, with the operative word being "IF":
"The price increases are having an impact on smaller ISPs but it wasn't something that we did lightly," said he [spokesman] told BBC News Online.
"If we got our sums wrong and the price changes are too big we might bring them down," he added.
Small internet service providers have united in anger over the changes, which do not affect the larger players such as AOL and Wanadoo because they buy broadband capacity from BT in bulk.To be fair, the
BBC News Online item tells us nothing new. Saying that they'd correct the prices "if" they got them wrong is hardly surprising.
More interesting is BT's admission that "
the price increases are having an impact on smaller ISPs", yet it's sad to see that their following statement appears to show little or no compassion for this.
