The national Broadband4Britain campaign has been busy celebrating success with the installation of its own 1Mbps broadband ADSL link, which was added yesterday at the groups headquarters in Chepstow, South Wales:
IT'S A BITTERSWEET FEELING AS BROADBAND4BRITAIN CAMPAIGN HQ FINALLY GETS OWN 1MB LINK
Euphoria gave way to resolve at Broadband4Britain headquarters today as the UK's broadband campaign group was itself linked up to broadband via a 1mb ADSL service in Chepstow, South Wales.
"This was always going to be a defining moment for the campaign," said Campaign Manager, Andy Williams. "It's been a long, hard slog and this could easily have been the moment to say 'let's give it a break'. Instead it was quite the opposite. We've calculated, and now experienced, the benefits of broadband to our small organisation, and they are quite breathtaking. It's simply unacceptable that, for want of coherent public policy, tens of thousands of small businesses and rural communities have no prospect of getting broadband."
Celebration greeted the moment when the stuttering and expensive 128 kilobit/s leased line connection was transformed into effortless high speed email and Internet performance.
The tangible benefits are:
- A reduction in costs of £8000 per annum, thanks to low and flat rate Internet access charges (approx £100 per month)
- An 8-fold increase in Internet capacity, from 128 to 1024 kilobits/s
- Increased flexibility and agility, allowing us to access all our office resources via an Internet VPN
MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT PLANNED NEXT WEEK
"In the past we've called on BT to live up to its responsibilities as the UKs largest telecomms operator. We think they've responded pretty well. Now we want to focus on government's vital role. We believe that short termism and a lack of joined-up thinking could be about to waste the best opportunity that rural Britain has to cross the digital divide. Watch this space," concluded Williams.
