The UK ISP operators of
Telewest (
blueyonder) are reported to have been hit by a massive spam attack, which has apparently knocked offline the e-mail services for up to 200,000 customers:
Normal service was resumed last night although the cableco is still ploughing through a backlog of 1.2 million emails it quarantined immediately after the attack.
Chad Raube, director of internet services at Telewest Broadband, said: "We experienced a major dictionary-style spam attack at the beginning of this week, which flooded our mail server and resulted in a large backlog of emails, around 80 per cent of which was spam."The Register notes that
Telewest is still busy trying to clear their servers of any remaining 'junk' messages, yet otherwise things should be back to normal.
It wouldn't be the first time that, in one form or another,
Telewest has had problems dealing with spam.
