While we're already aware that SSE Telecom and Scottish Hydro-Electric plan to bring Powerline broadband to Winchester, few other details have been released.
Thankfully
Southern Electric has now confirmed the June 2003 launch period for Powerline in Winchester:
From June 2003, homes and businesses in selected postcodes in Winchester are to get 1Mbps internet access for around £30 a month via their three-pin sockets - with no set-up fee and a modem thrown in.
The trial mirrors one already underway in North East Scotland, again conducted by Southern Electric, and provides a ray of hope for internet users who cannot get broadband via their phone line.
However, the technology won't be able to provide broadband for every home with a power socket. Local power sub-stations will be upgraded to handle data only when there is sufficient demand to make it financially viable - much like the BT model. The
Web-User item notes that the service should be available to 80% of properties in the area.
For those that have forgotten, the purpose of rolling out Powerline in Winchester, a city already covered by other technologies, is to test how competitive it can be.
