The European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA) claims that incumbent Telco's, such as BT (UK), still dominate European xDSL broadband connections.
ECTAs findings were published in the latest update to its xDSL scorecard, which shows the level of broadband coverage across the EU:
The Scorecard from the pro-privatisation trade association shows that DSL connections run by incumbents represent 69% of all broadband connections in the EU, and that 82% of all incumbent-run DSL connections are retailed to users by the incumbent as well.
The groups scorecard shows very little DSL interconnect has been provided. Virtually all of the DSL connections retailed by other ISPs rely on resale. For the first time, ECTA data now includes figures for DSL interconnect and show that in most countries competitors have not been able to use this service yet.
DSL interconnect is a key element of the new EU regulatory framework, set to come into force by 25th July this year. The industry association argues that DSL interconnect has the potential to increase consumer choice for broadband services.More @
