BT Openworld is helping businesses increase revenues by boosting their ability to attract internet shoppers to their sites.

Research by Web User found that more than 75 per cent of regular surfers bought Christmas presents online last year. This shows that shopaphobics are steering clear of the high street and using the internet to make purchases.

To help these individuals and boost the number of times they buy online, businesses must ensure their sites operate at peak performance, are easy-to-use and are presented in an effective and enticing manner. They also need to offer safe and secure payment methods and spot-on customer service.

BT Openworld has therefore launched a series of seven tips, entitled 'The Seven Sins of the Web'. These aim to help businesses ensure they increase the number of sales generated and make the most of shopaphobics browsing their sites.

The suggestions include information on how to ensure sites feature on search engines, as well as details on why it's necessary to monitor pages on a regular basis. It also urges companies to focus on their web presentation and customer service, and keep sites up-to-date and informative.

Jerry Thompson, head, business broadband at BT Openworld said: "Many consumers find that internet shopping is a welcome reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the high street. Savvy businesses are those that will make the most of this to attract and retain custom online."

For those traders that do not yet have an online presence, BT Openworld has launched a self-install 'Internet Trader Pack'. This enables sole traders and SMEs to use the internet as a direct sales channel. The pack can be installed within one day and includes an online 'store' module, plus a credit and debit card payment engine.
