The UK government is to follow up the European Union's lead by implementing a number of new e-mail privacy rules, which have been designed to help curb the growing tide of junk e-mail (SPAM) by effectively making it illegal:
From October, a European Union directive will make unsolicited e-mails illegal across member states. The government is currently consulting with industry on the recommendations.
Under the directive unsolicited e-mails may only be sent to individuals for direct marketing purposes and "with their prior consent" or where there is an existing customer relationship.The
BBC News Online item notes that SPAM now accounts for roughly 40% of global e-mail traffic. Sadly most junk messages come from outside of the UK and SPAMMERS rarely obey such laws.
