Hong Kong telecoms group Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCCW) is planning to place bids for up to 15 regional broadband wireless licences in the UK, potentially allowing it to form a national network:
PCCW is bidding for the licences through 15 companies using names including Flightallied, Duelwater, Raisepound and Poundradio. All the companies share the same registered address of 22 Bedford Row in London. Michael Butcher, who is a director of the Hong Kong group, sits on many or all of the boards of the bidding companies.
Successful bids for all 15 licences could cost PCCW just a few million pounds. The licences provide the ability to offer broadband internet and telecom services in competition with BT and the cable companies as well as wireless networking services to homes and businesses.
The Sunday Telegraph newspaper item reminds us that PCCW has made a previous attempt to enter the UK market before via a bid for Cable & Wireless (C&W), which failed.
