BTs Irish wing, Esat, has followed Eircom's announcement by revealing the prices of its own broadband ADSL products:
Esat BT said on Thursday that it would launch in May a broadband service with access at speeds of up to 512kbps for EUR49.99 per month (EUR40.90 ex VAT) with a once-off installation charge including a modem of EUR190 (EUR157 ex VAT).
This compares with Eircom's 512kbs product, I-stream Starter, which costs EUR54.45 per month with additional charges of EUR199.65 for an on-site install and EUR145.20 for a modem. Eircom is also offering a self-install version of the product that has the same rental fee and modem costs, but an installation charge of EUR99. All prices are inclusive of VAT.
According to Esat BT, the total set-up cost of its new service, called IOL Broadband, is 22 percent cheaper than Eircom's self-install version and 42 percent less expensive than the on-site install product. Esat BT said it had no plans at this stage to offer a self-install product.Eircom has responded by saying that market hold will all come down to quality of service and superiority of content, rather than cost.
