Market research group Screen Digest has found that by 2007 European broadband content will account for 1.8bn. During 2003 the same market was estimated to be worth 24m:
A significant market for paid-for broadband content is already developing in Europe, suggesting that concerns that internet users are unwilling to pay for content are unfounded.
European broadband homes are set to quadruple over the next four years. The main driver of this massive increase in content spending will be the exponential growth in the number of broadband households in Europe. At the end of 2003 just 18m homes had broadband connections. By 2007 this figure will have risen to more than 62m.
Many ISPs are now offering their customers optional, low-cost subscriptions to packages of entertainment services. These include video feeds, music, games and children's material. These bouquets will account for approximately half of consumer expenditure on broadband entertainment content by 2007.There's little doubt that broadband content will grow, yet the eventual size of the market remains in doubt (how much would you spend on content per month?).
