The governments 'Home Office' has rejected calls for an enquiry into the new public authority surveillance (snooping) powers:
Under the proposals, mobile operators and ISPs will be required to store information on users for up to 12 months. Details of sent and received emails will need to be kept for six months.
The scheme will initially be voluntary, but should service providers not co-operate the government has stated that it will force operators to comply. Two thirds of respondents to the consultation called for a wider review, but this was rejected.
A Home Office spokesman claimed that the government had taken the responses into account, and welcomed a debate on the issues of how authorities access personal information. "But on the specific issue of data access, we have already amended our proposals," he said. Many now fear that the data retention aspect will be made mandatory. More @
