Aramiska TWISTS Itself Into Rural BB

Posted: 17th Feb, 2004 By: MarkJ
The European and UK satellite broadband ISP, Aramiska, has confirmed that they're to play a key role in the new TWISTER project. The partnership of twelve companies is designed to help bring broadband to Europe’s rural areas:

Aramiska Selected As A Key Partner In New European Commission Funded Broadband Project

Aramiska, Europe's leading satellite broadband service provider, today announces that they are to play a key role in the new TWISTER project, which has been selected for co-funding by the European commission, helping to bring broadband to the rural areas of Europe, where ADSL providers fail to deliver.

The TWISTER project (Terrestrial Wireless Infrastructure integrated with Satellite Telecommunications for E-Rural) is a partnership of 12 companies, led by satellite company, EADS Astrium. TWISTER will support the development and widespread adoption of bi-directional satellite broadband services combined with wireless (WiFi) local networks to achieve broadband coverage in rural areas. Aramiska will bring its leading satellite technology expertise to the project, following the successful development, delivery and management of business and community broadband projects throughout the UK and Europe.

The TWISTER project will deploy and operate validation sites throughout Europe using Aramiska's proven fully managed broadband service. These validation sites will support applications to meet the specific needs of rural user communities in the domains of agriculture, education, community services, health care and e-business.

The European Commission sees access to broadband at competitive prices as a key enabler for the development of modern public services such as e-government, e-learning, e-health, and businesses. The higher speeds and always-on nature of Aramiska's satellite broadband services, provides benefits across all sectors including private, public sector and home users. Large faster up and downloading of data and images saves time, allows access to vast amounts of data and enables effective home working.

Philippe Bodart, CEO, Aramiska, said: "The TWISTER consortium is unique in being funded in part by public money. The consortium harnesses the expertise from across Europe and will be highly effective in addressing the digital divide created from the lack of broadband access in many rural areas. With additional funding from the European commission the TWISTER consortium is in a good position to make a significant impact on the provision of broadband to rural areas throughout Europe."

"As incumbent ADSL providers continue to fail on promises of connection, demand for satellite broadband technology has never been greater. Aramiska is looking forward to working with the TWISTER consortium to catalyse the delivery of broadband throughout Europe."

Aramiska's two-way high-speed service packages offer up to 2,048 Kbps downstream and 512 Kbps upstream data transmission throughout Europe. The open standard satellite technology, DVB-RCS, provides companies and communities based in areas not covered by terrestrial broadband networks with the fast, reliable and cost effective Internet connection necessary to download and transmit large amounts of data and run multimedia-heavy or other bandwidth-hungry applications.
