Train operator GNER has Wi-Fi (broadband wireless LAN - Hotspot) enabled one of its first East Coast Main Line service based trains:
The London to Scotland train service operator said that its Wi-Fi service would be taken onboard more of its trains during the summer, for both first and standard class passengers, with ultimate plans to fit satellites to the first ten of its rebuilt 'Mallard' electric trains running services between London King's Cross, the East Midlands, Yorkshire, the North East and Scotland, by the end of the year.
The new technology is being installed as part of the total rebuild of all 302 coaches, which will make up the complete 'Mallard' fleet.
Access to a thirty minute standard class Wi-Fi connection will cost travellers £2.95, while an hour session will cost £4.95. A three-hour connection will cost £9.95 with the service provided free for first class passengers.GNER is one of the first UK train operators to provide true uninterrupted Wi-Fi access at high speed.
