Manchester MetroNet (MMN), which is easily confused with the all too similarly name UK ISP 'MetroNet', has launched a broadband wireless local loop service in Manchester city:
Manchester MetroNet Launch Citys first Alternative Local Loop Service
Manchester MetroNet has officially Launched the first alternative local loop service in the Manchester area.
The network has been built using the assets of the now defunct Atlantic Telecom. Using a combination of 12 rooftop POP sites for wireless services, linked using a fibre optic ring that also takes in Telecity, the Norths premier peering house; Manchester MetroNet claim to have the most comprehensive wireless coverage of any major city in the UK.
The wireless network is built using carrier grade equipment, allowing connections of up to 155Mb out to end users with uptime that many Telcos would die for.
Our offering is purely a local loop service commented James McCall, MML Sales & Marketing Director. We are not looking to deal directly with end users. The plan is to partner with local connectivity providers like the ISP base, we all know they have no choice who currently provides the local loop, from ADSL right up to high capacity leased circuits, they must all use the incumbent Telco who often charge over the top and can take an unacceptable length of time to deliver
Manchester MetroNet can offer these guys an alternative and because we dont charge by the metre, we can compete very favourably with the incumbent.
McCall sees many advantages in a wireless local loop service; Wireless means we can deploy a circuit within 5 working days, provide high capacity links for short term contracts and even deliver VPN and burstable bandwidth for a fraction of the standard traditional leased line costs. Perhaps one of the key advantages is the independence factor -
This is the first true alternative local loop in the city. Remember what happens when we have BT local loop or core network failures in Manchester, the whole city comes to a standstill. Almost everyone is affected. MetroNet gives the ISP base a chance to provide a truly independent service and it can also be used to provide a redundant backup solution to existing traditional installations.
http://www.manchestermetronet.comWe note that MMN refers to itself as just MetroNet in the press release, although a check on the MetroNet ISP site shows that the companies share different addresses.
No doubt others will run into confusion there, not to mention the use of local loop terminology against wireless services, which is different from the LLU process were familiar with.
