Broadreach, the broadband wireless LAN hotspot operator, has won enough funding from shareholders to expand Wi-Fi coverage onto Virgin's (also an investor) fleet of trains and further around the UK in general:
Broadreach said it will use the cash to accelerate the growth of its network of fixed and Wi-Fi public Internet locations while also funding the launch its new BTSL subsidiary, strengthening its position within the on-train Internet access market, which according to Broadreach, is worth more than £200m a year.
Claiming to be the only company in the UK to specialise in the provision of on-board Wi-Fi access services for train operators, BTSL [Broadreach train services] - will form a significant part of Broadreach's future development, retaining technology partner, Pointshot Wireless, which already provides live services in the US and Canada.
Full trials of the service in the UK will get under way 'shortly', with train operating companies according to Broadreach, while the funding secured for BTSL will enable a roll out of the locations it currently has under contract. This will see Broadreach's network of fixed and wireless ReadytoSurf locations extending to over 4,000 sites over the next two years. We'd point out that GNER did something similar not more than a week ago.
