BT CUTS CONSUMER BROADBAND PRICES FOR GAMERS
BT today announced that it is reducing the price of its broadband products for online console gaming, allowing new users of Xbox® Live and PlayStation 2 Network Gaming to get online for less.
From April 1, 2004, BT is reducing the price of the router that gamers require to connect their broadband line to their games console from £99* to just £20 when purchased online (www.bt.com/onlinegaming), or £45 if purchased offline (0800 800 001).
Duncan Ingram, managing director at BT Openworld, said: Broadband adds a whole new dimension to the gaming experience by allowing you to play and talk to other gamers anywhere in the world. The percentage of UK broadband subscribers playing console games online is estimated to reach 17% by 2006, compared with only 8.5% across Europe as a whole** and we hope that by reducing the price of our router we will encourage more console gamers to get online.
The offer enables gamers to choose between BT Broadband, a simple, fast way to enjoy a high-speed internet connection, or BT Yahoo! Broadband a full service connection, combining broadband access with great Yahoo! content and customisation features.
Broadband (ADSL) is currently available to 85% of UK households, and an ever growing number of console gamers are being turned on to the benefits of broadband online gaming. BT reached its target of 2 million broadband users at the end of 2003, and has set itself a further target of 5 million broadband connections by 2006.
In addition, by the end of 2006 it is estimated that 10.5 million PlayStation 2 and Xbox® consoles will have been sold in the UK, more than a staggering one in eight of which (1.4 million) will be online**. This compares with a recent estimate of 100,000 consoles online by the end of 2003**, and represents 1300% projected growth over the next 3 years.
By reducing the price of Broadband from BT for online gaming, BT further emphasises its commitment to encourage the growth of online console gaming in the UK, a commitment which has already seen the introduction of a number of promotional initiatives with games publishers including Activision, SEGA, THQ and Ubisoft, as well as marketing and event based activity with Sony PlayStation 2 and Xbox.
