European ISP's are expected to lose an estimated 123 million euros to spam and viruses this year, rising to 159 million during 2005. Typically the UK, Germany and France have been hit hardest:
Sandvine said its measurements include the cost of specialised response teams, swamping of customer support resources and inflated transit costs. Perhaps the most damaging cost is "a loss of brand equity that aggravates the industry-wide problem of customer churn," the firm added.
In the UK, the cost to ISPs this year will hit EUR22.4 million, just behind the EUR22.7 million burden that German ISPs will bear, the firm claimed. Meanwhile, in France, EUR17.9 million will be spent in the wake of worms and viruses, while EUR12.4 million will be spent in Scandinavia.
Interestingly, Sandvine also claimed in its report that on any given day, between 5 percent and 12 percent of all Internet traffic moving across European ISP networks is malicious.Sadly many providers still choose not to make server side anti-virus filtering a compulsory measure.
SPAM is a far more complex problem, one for which filtering often isn't the best solution. More @
